Elijah Adebayo Fires Luton Out of the Relegation Zone as His First Hattrick Downs Brighton 4-0
Besides Newcastle upsetting Aston Villa away from home, the best surprise of the night belonged to Elijah Adebayo and Luton as they trashed Europa League contenders Brighton. Elijah Adebayo netted his first top-flight hattrick as the England striker made fun of Brighton’s usual solid defence. With Luton scoring two goals in the first three minutes, Brighton were lambs to the slaughter as they could not recover any resemblance of the team that went six games unbeaten heading into this encounter. Regardless, Elijah Adebayo’s goals lifted Luton from the relegation spot as they occupied 17th with a game in hand.

Elijah Adebayo Turned the Tides on Brighton
As one of the favourites for relegation before the season started, Luton played according to expectations when the two met on matchday one as Luton crumbled against the feared Seagulls 4-1. However, thanks to the brilliance of Elijah Adebayo, the Hatters reversed the tides on Brighton as Luton exacted revenge in the most dominating of fashion with a 4-0 blowout, their biggest home win in the league since 1989.
Dreamland started early for Elijah Adebayo, as he scored inside just 20 seconds with a header from close range against the sleepy Brighton defence. Then, Luton struck again two minutes later, with Chiedozie Ogbene beating Jason Steele with his first touch and rounding his act with a goal. With eggs on their faces, Brighton went in search of a way back, but it only left them further exposed as Elijah Adebayo confidently placed his effort into the bottom-right corner for a 3-0 lead heading into half-time.
Although Roberto De Zerbi made two changes after the break, it proved fruitless as Luton sealed their performance with a fourth. Elijah Adebayo, doing what a striker does best, placed himself in the box and anticipated any slips up as he nodded home his hattrick from two yards out to achieve Luton’s biggest win this season. The victory means they are out of the relegation zones with a game in hand over Nottingham Forest in 16th and Everton in 18th. On the other hand, Brighton could drop out of the top ten if results don’t go their way.
Elijah Adebayo Elated with First Premier League Hattrick
Speaking on his performance in his post-match interview, Elijah Adebayo stated it was a dream of every young footballer. “It’s a wonderful feeling. Throughout my entire career, you dream of nights like this, playing non‑league. For many of us who have been on such a journey, we thrive and wish for nights like this. I couldn’t be happier for the group of lads that are in there, who have been on an incredible journey.”
As for the emotional scenes at kickoff, where club captain Tom Lockyer walked around the pitch saluting the applauding crowd after recovering from a cardiac arrest during a match last month, Elijah Adebayo responded: “Locks was in yesterday (at the training ground) and you can tell straight away that it gave everyone a lift. And then he comes in today, and the gaffer said just go and play how he would, which is bravery, desire, character. We want to keep showing and proving to people that we can compete at this level.”
Elijah Adebayo also received praise from his manager, Rob Edwards, as the gaffer stated: “Delighted for Eli. He deserves it because of his work rate and his all-round game. With his link-up play as well now, he’s becoming a real threat and bringing other people into play,” said manager Rob Edwards. It was a team performance tonight. We’re incredibly aggressive when we press, and our defenders deserve a lot of credit.”
The Relegation Battle Is Heating Up with Nine Teams in Contention
While the relegation battles do not generate as much focus as the top of the table, this season is shaping to be a battle on both ends. With nine teams, from Fulham to Sheffield United, contesting for a spot in next season’s Premier League, a single win against a top-half opposition could mean a place in England’s top flight or second division.
As Luton will be in the thick of it, Elijah Adebayo becoming Luton’s first player to score a Premier League hattrick would be a massive booster for the promoted side, considering they have played quite well against the top tier oppositions with only a goal separating them from gaining a point against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.
